With a Middle Eastern adventure in my mind when I set off, today has been just a touch surreal. Contributing to this were the somewhat incongruous tune to 'One Night in Bangkok' and the all too famous quote from Douglas MacArthur. Neither of which really seem to fit.
I think what to
day has reinforced is that there will be less time in large cities on this trip and more time exploring the countryside. Having said all that Singapore is not without its charms. It is impeccably clean and enough cafes and restaurants to feed an invading army. I started the day with a wander and cruise along the river, and this afternoon spent some time exploring the Singapore Zoo. Despite the ambiguity with which I view zoos, this place deserves the accolades it receives. The humidity is stiffling; I feel as though I'm walking into a wall every time I walk out of the air conditioned comfort of a building or a bus. I can't imagine a greater difference to a Victorian winter with an early start to the ski season (come to think of it, considering where I am going, I better hold that thought...). Having a digital camera is already proving to be a dangerous thing. I'm not sure I brought capacity to hold all the photos I will take if
I keep this rate up!
My bus will soon arrive to take me back the airport and on to Istanbul. In some ways it's abit of a pity. I have a feeling this place would really come alive at night. Oh well, maybe MacArthur had a point after all.........
